Frequently Asked Questions
Navigating the therapy process can raise many questions. These answers are designed to help you feel more prepared and at ease as you consider beginning our work together.
Session Details
How long is a typical session?
Individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. This duration, often referred to as the 'therapeutic hour,' allows us enough time to delve into your thoughts and feelings while maintaining a focused and manageable pace for our work together.
How often should I attend therapy?
Consistency is key to the therapeutic process. I generally recommend that clients attend weekly sessions initially. This regular rhythm helps to build a strong therapeutic relationship and maintain momentum in exploring the challenges you are facing.
What can I expect from the introductory session?
The introductory session is primarily an initial consultation for us to get to know each other. I will ask about what brings you to therapy now and what you hope to achieve. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions and see if you feel comfortable working together.
Some questions you might have.
What happens if Im not very good at talking about my feelings?
Therapy can progress at a pace that feels safe for you. By simply explaining that you feel nothing, or find it hard to show any emotions, is a valid and strong point to find ways to explore and understand the reasoning for this and slowly work on ways to make you feel more connected with your emotions.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
It's individual for everyone, but in general I think you slowly start to build up some self-worth and find you deal with situations differently. People around you can also often comment that they have noticed a positive difference in you.
Do I have to talk about my childhood?
We certainly don't have to start talking about your childhood initially, especially if it was a difficult time. However I do strongly believe that thing we experienced in our childhood, shapes the way be behave as adults, so it is something I would gently encourage us to work through at some stage of the therapeutic work.
Can counselling help me with anger?
Absolutely, it's a feeling I work a lot with, especially with my male clients. I often find there are strong feelings underneath the anger. We will work to discover the real emotions that are being felt below the anger. With our work together we can try to stay and explore the underlying feelings which over time can reduce the protective feelings of anger that come in.
